A massive Russian missile and drone barrage hit the Kyiv
share.google/aimode/uN6AVnZE…
Russia launched one of its largest aerial assaults of the year against Kyiv, firing a massive combination of 600 strike drones and 90 missiles overnight. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the attack involved Russia’s nuclear-capable, hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile, which targeted the nearby city of Bila Tserkva. At least four people were killed and more than 80 others were injured across the capital and its surrounding region. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Damage and Casualties
The bombardment caused widespread devastation, hitting more than 40 locations and recording damage in every single district of the capital: [3, 5, 6, 7]Casualties: Two people died in Kyiv city, and two others were killed in the broader Kyiv region. Over 30 people required immediate hospitalization.
Infrastructure: The blasts severely damaged at least seven multi-story residential buildings, including a five-story complex in the Shevchenkivskyi district that partially collapsed.
Civilian Sites: Projectiles and falling debris struck schools, supermarkets, warehouses, a shopping center, and the main headquarters of the national postal service (Ukrposhta) on Independence Square.
Cultural Impact: The blast wave damaged the National Art Museum, though its historic collection remained unharmed. [1, 3, 8, 9, 10]Air Defense Performance
According to reports from the Ukrainian Air Force, air defenses successfully intercepted the vast majority of the incoming threats: [4, 11]549 out of 600 strike drones were shot down or jammed.
55 out of 90 air, sea, and ground-launched missiles were destroyed.
19 missiles failed to reach their intended targets due to technical errors or electronic countermeasures, though several ballistic missiles pierced defenses to impact the capital. [2, 4]Context and Escalation
The attack follows explicit threats of retaliation from Moscow. Russia blamed Ukraine for a deadly drone strike days prior on a dormitory in Russian-occupied Starobilsk, Luhansk, which reportedly killed 18 people. While Ukraine denied targeting civilians—stating it struck a Russian military drone unit—Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a harsh response. The deployment of the Oreshnik hypersonic missile marks only the third time Russia has used the weapon in Ukraine, drawn from its strategic arsenal as a form of political intimidation. [2, 12, 13]
