The News And Times Review – NewsAndTimes.org
Well, the worst did not happen — there was no kind of demarche — and the imitation of negotiations will continue for several more weeks or months.
Zelensky spoke and behaved in a restrained manner, but his facial expressions occasionally gave him away. Which is hardly surprising, to be honest. There was a noticeable sense of falseness in the talking points about a referendum. But so be it…
Trump was performing in his own show, trying to appeal to both narrow and broad audiences: talking to journalists about food, and about how he supposedly feels sorry for those killed in the war. (Though not sorry enough to demand an immediate ceasefire.)
At the same time, he remained the same Trump we already know well.
He spoke about the allegedly $350 billion spent by Biden on Ukraine, about Hillary Clinton’s “fault” rather than Vladimir Putin’s in the collapse of trade between the US and Russia. And eventually he admitted his ignorance regarding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant — which he is bargaining over with Putin — only to reveal that until today he didn’t even know its scale…
And the main evidence of the pro-Russian mindset of the current president of America is his phrase about how he (we) should put ourselves in Putin’s place…
These were merely observations of the public part of the meeting. The main things, undoubtedly, happened behind closed doors.
As well as in phone calls with Putin, with which today’s negotiations began and with which they will end. It looks as though Trump received instructions from Putin at the beginning, and at the end reported back on what had been done.
