Ukraine fights against one of its worst enemies: oblivion

TThe meeting takes place in a warehouse in Kiev where medicines, emergency kits and other products are collected for Ukrainian soldiers fighting at the front. Taras, a 45-year-old volunteer who casts here all the free time his job leaves him, asks not to reveal the location so as not to give clues to the enemy. “Of course we are tired after almost two years of large-scale invasion,” he admits at one point in the conversation. “Many people ask me about war fatigue. And yes, of course there is. But in addition to fatigue, we are furious with the Russians and very proud of our resilience. To those who doubt, I ask only one thing: to step aside, not to stand in the way of our victory,” he concludes solemnly.

These words sum up quite well the mood of the dozen interviewees from the political, military and cultural world throughout this week, on a trip organized by the cultural NGO PEN Ukraine in the provinces of Kiev and Chernihiv attended by this newspaper. The certainty about the final victory – so common in the discourse of many Ukrainians since last February 24, 2022, when Russia launched all its fury against the southwestern neighbor – begins to show certain nuances in view of the problems detected on the horizon.

The much-heralded counteroffensive has not borne the expected fruits and the arrival of winter – palpable already this week in Kiev, where the first snows have begun – anticipates a stalemate on the front. No major changes are expected at least until after the summer of 2024, according to Ukrainian and U.S. military analysts. The capital suffered the heaviest Shahed drone bombing of the entire war on Saturday, a move authorities interpret as the signal of a new Russian bombing campaign to disrupt essential energy services during the winter. But almost worse is the news coming from abroad.

The Gaza war has robbed Ukraine of the attention of governments and world public opinion. After 21 months of war – on a large scale, a tagline that the Ukrainians add automatically, as if they had a spring in their step, to remind that the Kremlin’s aggression did not begin last year, but in 2014, with the illegal annexation of Crimea – the risk of exhaustion in Western capitals is palpable. According to Bild newspaper on Friday, the United States and Germany want to force Ukrainian leader Volodymir Zelensky into negotiations with the Russians as soon as possible. To this end, they plan to supply only the weaponry strictly necessary to keep Ukrainian defenses from collapsing, according to the German tabloid.

Critics of Marxism say it cannot explain why nationalism is such a powerful force in the modern world. But the Austrian socialist thinker Otto Bauer developed a sophisticated, illuminating theory of nationalism in the 1900s that is ripe for rediscovery today. My Opinion: The Wagner Group fighters may have participated in the 2023 Raid around Gaza in cooperation and conjunction with Hamas. This Raid (that’s what it is, in military terms), increasingly looks like the very carefully, professionally thought out, planned, and performed MILITARY OPERATION, on the par with the abilities and consistent with the stylistic patterns of the known actors, such as the Wagner Group and the GRU. If this line of thought is correct it opens a number of the conceptual geopolitical questions and issues.

At the end of last month, Paris police launched an investigation into the spray painting of Stars of David on Parisian buildings in which Jews live. The police gauged this to be a hate crime, until the arrest of two suspects – Moldavian citizens.

<< Follow Ynetnews on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | TikTok >>
After a short investigation, the two confessed to the crime, explaining that a Russian source had sent them to commit the act. Why would a Russian source instruct foreign nationals to spray paint Stars of David on Jewish homes in France? To answer this question, we must understand Russian President Vladimir Putin’s modus operandi.

The man Prime Minister Netanyahu described in one of his election campaigns as a friend “in a league of his own”, continues to employ tactics reminiscent of the KGB where he was raised – with the intent of causing chaos and disrupting world order. The endgame is to reinstate Russia to the status he believes the country deserves.

This is what stands behind most of Putin’s actions, and Hamas’s October 7th attack is just one more opportunity to do just that. Putin is yet to condemn the attack. His senior government officials hosted a delegation of Hamas leaders in Moscow and he’s gone as far as comparing Israel’s siege of the Gaza Strip to Germany’s siege of Leningrad that caused the deaths of one million people.

After last month’s storming of the airport in Dagestan capital, Makhachkala by hundreds of people shouting antisemitic slogans and looking for Jews arriving on a flight from Israel, Putin did convene his senior government officials for an extraordinary meeting. In the meeting, he blamed Ukraine and the United States for inciting the local population and expressed his sadness for the women and children of Gaza, making no reference to Hamas’s attack on Israel.

All this illuminates that, like the notion that Hamas wasn’t presently interested in military conflict, the idea that Putin wouldn’t align himself against Israel, has proven misguided. This assumption lay behind Israel being the only Western country not to stand unequivocally behind Ukraine after the Russian invasion, refusing to condemn war crimes committed by Russia, and refraining from joining Western sanctions on Russia.

How did Putin morph from the leader who handed Netanyahu the triumph of repatriating Naama Issachar during an election campaign and coordinating with Israel allowing her to bomb targets in Syria – to clearly choosing Hamas’s side?

How has the Russian leader, who was the first to call U.S. President George W. Bush after the 9/11 attacks, aligned himself with terrorists who have committed unforgivable crimes towards the Jews, despite all agreeing he’s no antisemite?

“The Putin-Netanyahu relationship has been good over the years, because Putin thinks Netanyahu is like him,” B., a Moscow-based journalist asking to remain anonymous for fear of being labeled a foreign agent, said. “This is why Putin has a good relationship with Erdogan. Putin sees a lot of his own traits in these two leaders: A strong leader ruling his country, alone for many years, in some ways isolated due to this protracted rule.

“A further similarity between the leaders is that Putin’s first term of office is in no way similar to his successive terms. Netanyahu’s behavior can also be divided pre and post-2015, when he homed in on controlling the media and further power bases so as to consolidate his own power.“

B. refrains from speaking Putin’s name in full, referring to him by all his initials of his complete name, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, “VVP”, or as “PU”, for fear of the conversation being tapped. “It’s not right to make generalizations when talking about Putin, because, for him, everything is personal and specific,” she says. “But for the most part, his most defining trait is that he’s an agent of chaos. The more chaos in the world, the more he believes he’ll benefit. These are historic KGB tactics.”

A current example of planting chaos can be seen at the Russia-Finland border. Six months after Finland joined NATO, to the great displeasure of Russia with whom she shares an 800-mile border, hundreds of undocumented refugees from Iraq, Yemen, and Syria per week started showing up at the open border crossing between the two countries.

Finland is convinced that Russia is sending them in response to Finland’s growing cooperation with the West. Finland has consequently closed some of the border crossings, creating new friction points – to Russia’s great satisfaction.

“Putin enjoys seeing the large-scale demonstrations sweeping European capitals and the United States, as well as what’s going on at the American universities” B. continues. “Ironically, Russia now looks like the safest place for Jews: Following draconian laws passed imposing custodial sentences on anyone going out to demonstrate, there are no demonstrations at all in Russia – neither for nor against Israel.”

300 thousand Jews presently live in Russia and current surveys suggest that antisemitism levels are lower among younger Russians. A survey conducted at the end of October by the Russian Levada Center, concluded that two-thirds of those polled chose neither side in the present war in Gaza and that 20% support the Palestinians (the survey did not differentiate between Hamas and the Palestinians), and 6% support Israel.

“The change in Putin’s behavior should come as no surprise,” says Arkady Mil-Man, Head of the Russia Program at the Institute for National Security Studies and former Israeli Ambassador to Russia. “This is classic KGB. This is where his character took shape. He views the world completely differently from the way we do.“

Arkady Mil-ManArkady Mil-Man

Arkady Mil-Man

(Photo: Chen Galili)

Mil-man was among the founders of the Israeli embassy in Moscow when official relations between the countries kicked off and served as Israeli ambassador from 1993 to 1995 and again from 2002 to 2006. He is the Israeli with the most experience with Putin. Over the years, they met many times. In his early years at the Kremlin, Putin gave Mil-man special treatment talking to him more than with ambassadors of other countries.

“Putin isn’t antisemitic” Mel-man continues. “That’s why he views Israel as another tool in his toolbox. There was a time when he used to say that Israel’s security is important to Russia because a million former Russian citizens live here. He hasn’t been saying this lately. It would be wrong to say that Putin has a soft spot for Israel. Putin only sees how Israel serves his interests. And as the world redivides into East and West, he classifies Israel as West and his true colors are starting to show. “

Yuli Dubov, a Russian writer and scientist who has been living in London for many years for fear of persecution by Putin, believes that Russia has been playing a “double game” for years. He thinks that Putin is taking Hamas’s side due to the dependency on Iran that his country has developed.

“Until October 7th, Putin felt comfortable sitting on the fence – being Netanyahu’s friend and supporting Israel, while also being on good terms with Hamas,“ he says. ”It’s allowed him to influence both sides. But the game’s over and he has to choose a side. As Russia has become more dependent on Iran during the war in Ukraine, Putin has been forced to choose this axis.“

“When the war in Gaza is over, he’ll realize what he’s done and might try switching sides again. In the meantime, he’ll carry on transferring arms to Hamas and Hezbollah, but will also offer to mediate for the release of hostages. Israel, can’t sit on the fence either for too long regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. It’s okay for a short time, but it becomes more uncomfortable as time goes on“

Dubov also knows Putin well – after having served as right-hand-man to Boris Berezovsky, a Russian oligarch who fled to London following a dispute with Putin and who was found dead in his home in 2013.

Like Mil-man, who explains that “Putin has gone through a complete metamorphosis since 2002.” Dubov also believes that the Russian president of today is not the Putin of 20 years ago.

“As Putin’s rule has continued, his sense of self-importance has inflated. Extended rule turns people into monsters and that’s what’s happened. He didn’t used to be a monster, but rather a regular KGB official. He wasn’t the most honest, but he wasn’t a monster. “ Dubov notes that he knows the man believed to be behind the Telegram account claiming that Putin is dead and that a double has been gracing our TV screens for the past few weeks, stressing that this is completely untrue.

Putin was born in St. Petersburg in 1952 to a family of modest means. Two brothers had died before his birth. In 1975, he graduated with a Law degree from the University of Leningrad and was soon recruited into the ranks of the KGB. He later said it had been a childhood dream. In 1985, he made another dream come true when he was sent to Dresden, Germany to mark Germany’s 1945 capitulation to the Allies.

He was awarded a medal of distinction for his collaboration with the German Stasi. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, he returned to Leningrad, not long before the city reverted to its former name of St. Petersburg. Here, his career took a turn.

In 1991, Putin developed a good relationship with the then mayor of Petersburg, Anatoly Sobchak – the first democratically elected mayor who was taking a liberal line. Putin was advanced to the position of his advisor. After Sobchak’s defeat in the following mayoral elections, Putin moved to Moscow where he completed an MA in Economics.

He entrenched himself into the party of then-president, Boris Yeltsin, whose power was waning by then. In 1998, he was appointed head of the FSB that replaced the KGB but, in reality, was its de facto reincarnation. In 1999, he was appointed prime minister on the understanding that this anonymous, grey official would allow other individuals to keep hold of their power. This is how, unintentionally, the undisputed ruler of Russia of twenty years built himself up.

In hindsight we may assess Putin by observing that, even in his early years as the Soviet Union was disintegrating, he was less interested in rebuilding a new Russia and more in money and power. Despite studying Law at university, the culture in which he was raised in Leningrad, more closely resembles that of mafia codes”.

This is how Mil-man reads Putin’s past – a man whose net worth is estimated at $200 billion and is concealed in various hiding places across the globe, including with several oligarchs whose fortunes are regarded as the property of the Russian president.

“Initially, everyone around Putin thought he was a dull, harmless individual who would continue the same policy of connecting with the West and building up a system that looked democratic, but really wasn’t. It would still employ a vast array of supervision and control mechanisms.“

Mil-man explains that in 2004, NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen visited Russia and Putin said something almost unbelievable to him: ‘I hope that NATO’s expansion will contribute to Europe’s safety.’ But the West and Israel missed a few important points about Putin. “

At the 2007 Munich Security Conference, Putin gave his first anti-American speech. He spoke for the first time about the unipolar world in which the United States is the hegemon while Russia isn’t prominent enough.

Putin claimed that the United States had crossed boundaries and thought she could rule the world alone. Echoes of this argument can be heard in his first reference to October 7th, in which he hardly mentioned Israel directly and claimed that the attack resulted from mistaken Middle East policies of the United States.

Since the Munich Security Conference speech, we can see Putin’s new leadership style – destroying independent media, trampling on personal rights, and assassinating political opponents on his watch. The most prominent of these political opponents was Boris Nemtsov, deputy to former Russian president, Boris Yeltsin.

Nemtsov became one of Putin’s sharpest critics and was murdered in 2015. Before the murder, in 2014 Russia annexed Crimea, an action broadly criticized by the international community, but led to no action taken.

Mil-man explains Russia’s decision to go to war against Ukraine in terms of Putin’s dictatorial style, rather than in terms of a desire to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO – that was not on the agenda at the time anyway. “My take on the invasion of Ukraine is much simpler,” he says.

“Ukraine irritates Putin because the Ukrainians have twice, in 2004 and 2014, brought down regimes set up there in his name. Putin views Ukraine’s desire for regime change turning it into a democracy, as illegitimate.”

“For years, Putin believed that Russia would rule the world alongside the United States as another superpower, but that never happened because Russia was only a pretend superpower,” Mil-man explains. “Economically, she made up just over one percent of world trade, and since the invasion of Ukraine, it’s become clear her nuclear weapons are the only thing that really defines her as a military superpower.”

Russia is ranked in the world’s top ten for GDP, but lags behind in 76th place when it comes to GDP per capita. Furthermore, until Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army was regarded as among the strongest in the world, but in the two years since the invasion, Russia is far from achieving her objectives and has lost tens of thousands of soldiers.“

Ukraine is now at the center of Putin’s policies and dictates his actions – including regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. The regional war in the Middle East seems like the best news Putin could wish for: As long as the world is busy watching Gaza, it’s not following what’s going on in Ukraine and Russia can act relatively quietly.

Furthermore, ever since the United States started transferring additional military aid to Israel, in Russia they’re hoping that the Republican party – whose members were ambivalent about support to Ukraine – would rather focus their resources on Israel.

The decisive position taken by U.S. President, Joe Biden following the Hamas attack, followed by the deployment of American aircraft carriers in the Middle East and Arabian Sea as a deterrent to Iran and Hezbollah, surprised countries across the globe – including the Russian president.

But in doing this, America has drawn clear lines. If the United States positions itself alongside Israel, with all its military power, resources, and influence, it means that Russia must take the other side.

Over the past two years, this perception has strengthened Russia-Iran relations into a kind of alliance of outcasts. The two countries, sanctioned by the West, have formed a strategic alliance. But unlike in the past, when Russia clearly had the military upper hand, the situation is different now.

Russia depends on Iran for the supply of modern weapons. Russia and Iran have a common interest in heating things up in the Middle East to ensure the region remains volatile so as to increase oil prices. In the meantime, oil prices have remained below forecasts at $150 per barrel in the event of escalation.

What will Putin do now? Like many experts on Russia, Mil-man and Dubov believe that Putin will not intervene on the Gaza-Hamas front and will suffice with talk. It’s in Putin’s interests for the war to continue as long as possible. Every now and then, he can throw a match or two into the fire to ignite chaos or signal to China about annexing Taiwan.

Experts estimate that Putin is not interested in World War Three as he understands that Russia will be unable to deal with NATO armies. But time is on his side, and it’s starting to show in the polls: The possible return to the White House of his long-time friend, Donald Trump, whose idea of “sorting out” the world is the stuff of Putin’s dreams.

Russian President Vladimir Putin intensified his crackdown on LGBTQ people earlier this month when he signed new legislation making it illegal to spread “LGBT propaganda.” Experts see this latest move as a continuation of the government’s attempt to control the population and shut out what it deems “non-traditional” values.

In 2013, Russia passed a law banning the “propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia among minors.” The new law expands upon that, to include adults as well.

“It also expands the kind of venues in which this propaganda is imagined to be taking place, like on television and advertising, streaming services, the internet, and it ladders a whole series of different penalties for these different venues,” said Dan Healey, a professor of Russian history at the University of Oxford.

Under the new legislation, individuals and organizations violating the law can be fined in amounts ranging from several hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars.

Angela Stent, a senior non-resident fellow at the Brookings Institution, said this has had a devastating effect for LGBTQ Russians.

“There are lots of websites in Russia for that community, and people are beginning to close them down because they think that they’re going to get into trouble,” she said. “You’ve got much more a sense now of people saying, ‘Can we stay in Russia with these laws there?'”

Healey said activists in the country are worried these laws will drive queer communities further underground.

“This is really … people ceasing to be visible, ceasing to act in organizations, and also to go back to methods of meeting and gathering that resemble the Soviet period, really,” he said.

Both Stent and Healey agree that these moves by Putin and his government are connected to the war in Ukraine and the growing authoritarianism in the country.

“This is part, now, of much more repression, particularly since the war began in Ukraine,” Stent said. “They [the Kremlin] pass a lot of more repressive laws, you know, throwing people in jail who criticize the war, who criticize the president.”

Healey noted that this decree to protect “traditional values” is working alongside the Kremlin’s ideology to create an alleged security concern to sell to the Russian people.

“So this war is now being fought for traditional values as much as it’s being fought against supposed Nazis who run Ukraine according to the Kremlin narrative,” he said.

This new law also reflects Russia’s anti-Western propaganda to its citizens.

“What they’re saying is that the West is trying to impose these non-Christian, non-traditional views on Russia,” Stent said. She cited an interview given by arms dealer Viktor Bout after he was returned to Russia in exchange for WNBA star Brittney Griner.

“He went back there and said, ‘Oh, the United States is a terrible place. They have at least [72] genders there,'” Stent recalled.

She said Russian media has also claimed that, in the U.S., people are only allowed to have same-sex parental units, and that people are told everyone should identify as transgender. All of these claims are false and do not reflect the reality of life in the U.S. or other Western countries.

“In other words, they’re exaggerating and making up these fables about life in the West,” Stent said. “And that’s, again, partly to tell the Russian people, ‘the West is trying to get us, they’re trying to undermine us, and you should be afraid of them.'”

The Russian government’s stance on these issues hearkens back to the policies of the Soviet Union, and the targeting of queer people may offer Putin a chance to better align his political supporters.

“[The LGBTQ community] can be raised as a particularly frightening threat to your family in some way that is visceral and that is very emotive, and it motivates a base of support,” Healey said.

“And particularly where that base of support is close to religious views, there is a lot of crossover there that works for political opportunists who are using official forms of homophobia to define their political stance.”

The report, dated Nov 18, cited an assessment based on an investigation by the police with detained Hamas fighters from that day, which also discovered that Hamas fighters did not have advance knowledge about the music festival and “decided to target the party spontaneously”.

The story does not specify the condition of the Israeli festivalgoers that were hit with the helicopter fire.

Separately, an Anadolu Agency report carried excerpts from Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, which mentioned the challenges faced by Israeli forces who “found it difficult to identify Hamas militants”, adding that the pilots “used artillery” against civilians at the festival.

The report also said that Hamas fighters were instructed to blend in with the crowd to deceive the air force into mistaking them for Israelis.

“In this way, they tried to fool the Air Force into believing that those below were Israelis. This deception worked for a while until the Apache helicopters had to break free of all restraints,” the report added.

“When they realised that, some of them decided to use artillery shells against the terrorists independently, without getting permission from their superiors.”

The police also estimated that 364 people were killed in the festival without revealing their identities.

Meanwhile, the Times of Israel carried a statement from the Israeli police, which distanced itself from Haaretz’s report.

“The Haaretz article in Hebrew cites an unnamed Israel Police official saying that its investigation of the incident found that an IDF helicopter at the site that was firing at terrorists ‘apparently harmed a few partygoers who were in the area’.”

It quoted the police as saying its investigation “focused only and solely on police activity, and not any IDF activity, and therefore did not provide “any indication about the harm of civilians due to aerial activity there”.

It then called on local news outlets to “take responsibility for their publications and only base stories on official sources”. “Elements of the Haaretz article were taken widely out of context on social media and used to blame Israel for hundreds of civilian deaths on Oct 7, none of which has any basis in fact and in extensive reporting about the massacre,” it added.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The night was a getaway. Thousands of young men and women gathered at a vast field in southern Israel near the Gaza border to dance without a care. Old and new friends jumped up and down, reveling in the swirl of the bass-heavy beats.

Maya Alper was standing toward the back of the bar with teams of environmentally conscious volunteers, picking up trash and passing out free vodka shots to party-goers who reused their cups. Just after 6.a.m., as a light-blue dawn broke and the headliner D.J. took the stage, air raid sirens cut through the ethereal trap music. Rockets streaked overhead.

Alper, 25, jumped into her car and raced to the main road. But at the intersection she encountered crowds of stricken festival attendees, shouting at drivers to turn around. Then, a noise. Firecrackers? Panicked men and women staggering down the road just in front of her fell to the ground in pools of blood. Gunshots.

Saturday’s attack on the open-air Tribe of Nova music festival is believed to be the worst civilian massacre in Israeli history, with at least 260 dead and a still undetermined number taken hostage. Dozens of Hamas militants who had blown through Israel’s heavily fortified separation fence and crossed into the country from Gaza opened fire on about 3,500 young Israelis who had come together for a joyous night of electronic music to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Some attendees were drunk or high on drugs, magnifying their confusion and terror.

The Associated Press reviewed more than dozen videos taken during the massacre and interviewed survivors to reconstruct how the deadly attack unfolded. The party was held in a dusty field outside of Kibbutz Re’im, about 3.3 miles (5.3 kilometers) from the wall that separates Gaza from southern Israel.

“We were hiding and running, hiding and running, in an open field — the worst place you could possibly be in that situation,” said Arik Nani from Tel Aviv, who had gone to the party to celebrate his 26th birthday. “For a country where everyone in these circles knows everyone, this is a trauma like I could never imagine.”

While rockets rained down, revelers said, militants converged on the festival site while others waited near bomb shelters, gunning down people who were seeking refuge. Many of the militants, who arrived in trucks and on motorcycles, were wearing body armor and brandishing AK-47 assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.

Videos compiled by Israeli first responders and posted to the social media site Telegram show armed men plunging into the panicked crowd, mowing down fleeing revelers with bursts of automatic fire. Many victims were shot in the back as they ran.

Israeli communities on either side of the festival grounds also came under attack, with Hamas gunmen abducting dozens of men, women and children — including elderly and disabled people — and killing scores of others in Saturday’s unprecedented surprise attack.

The staggering toll from the festival was becoming clear Monday, as Israel’s rescue service Zaka said paramedics had recovered at least 260 bodies. Festival organizers said they were helping Israeli security forces locate attendees who were still missing. The death toll could rise as teams continue to clear the area.

As the carnage unfolded before her, Alper pulled a few disoriented-looking revelers into her car from the street and accelerated in the opposite direction. One of them said he had lost his wife in the chaos and Alper had to stop him from breaking out of the car to find her. Another said she had just seen Hamas gunmen shoot and kill her best friend. Another rocked in his seat, murmuring over and over, “We are going to die.” In the rear-view mirror, Alper watched the dance floor where she had spent the past ecstatic hours transform into a giant cloud of black smoke.

Festival-goers who managed to make it to the road and parking lot where their vehicles were parked found themselves trapped in a traffic jam, with militants stalking the cars and spraying those inside with gunfire. Drone footage of the scene taken after the attack and reviewed by the AP show chaotic lines of cars where drivers had attempted to flee. Some burned-out vehicles were flipped onto their sides, while others had bullet holes visible in shattered windows.

Nowhere was safe, Alper said. The roar of explosions, hysterical screams and automatic gunfire felt closer the further she drove. When a man just meters away shouted “God is great!”, Alper and her new companions sprung out of the car and sprinted through open fields toward a mass of bushes.

Alper felt a bullet whiz past her left ear. Aware the gunmen would outrun her, she plunged into a tangle of shrubs. Peering through thorns, she said she saw one of her passengers, the girl who had lost her friend, shriek and collapse as a gunman stood over her limp body, grinning.

“I can’t even explain the energy they (the militants) had. It was so clear they didn’t see us as human beings,” she said. “They looked at us with pure, pure hate.”

Videos show the gunmen executed some of the wounded at point-blank range as they crouched on the ground. Some of the militants even rifled through the vehicles of their victims, grabbing purses and backpacks.

An unknown number of people from the festival were taken hostage. A video posted to social media by militants and verified by the AP shows an Israeli couple, Noa Argamani and her partner Avinatan Or, being dragged away by their captors.

Argamani, her face contorted in panic, shouts “No, no!” in Hebrew while being forced onto a motorbike, sandwiched between two gunmen. She reaches out for Or, whose hands are bound behind his back as a group of militants march him forward.

Their whereabouts are now unknown. But Hamas claims it is now holding more than 100 Israelis as hostages. On Monday, the group threatened to begin systematically killing captives if the Israeli military bombs Palestinian areas without warning.

For over six hours, Alper and thousands of other concert attendees hid without help from the Israeli army as Hamas militants sprayed automatic gunfire and threw grenades.

Her limbs were so contorted into a tangled mess in the bush that she couldn’t wiggle her toes. At different points, she heard militants speak in Arabic just beside her. A yoga devotee who practices meditation, Alper said she focused on her breath — “breathing and praying in every way I knew possible.”

“Every time I thought of anger, or fear or revenge, I breathed it out,” she said. “I tried to think of what I was grateful for — the bush that hid me so well that even birds landed on it, the birds that were still singing, the sky that was so blue.”

A tank instructor in the Israeli army, Alper knew she was safe when she heard a different kind of explosion — the sound of an Israeli army tank round. She shouted for help and soon soldiers were lifting her out of the bush. Around her lay the lifeless body of one of her friends. The girl from her car she had seen collapse was nowhere to be found; she believes that Hamas militants took her into Gaza.

Alper said the Israeli army, on its way to fight Hamas militants in the hard-hit kibbutz of Be’eri near the Gaza border, was at a loss as to know what to do with her.

At that moment, a pick-up truck full of Palestinian citizens of Israel pulled up. The men from the Bedouin city of Rahat were scouring the area to help rescue Israeli survivors. Helping Alper into their car, they drove her to the police station, where she collapsed, crying, into her father’s arms.

“This is not just war. This is hell,” Alper said. “But in that hell I still feel that somehow, we can choose to act out of love, and not just fear.”

Since October 7, it has been impossible to truly understand Hamas’ motives and intentions. It can be just as hard to understand Palestinian public opinion right now. After the first few weeks of chaos, two Palestinian polls became available last week – and there is no good way to spin the results.
