Canada: PM Carney Calls for Snap Election, Warns US President Trump
Mark Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister of Canada on March 14, called for a snap election to be held on April 28. He aimed to secure a strong mandate to address the economic threat posed by the “unjustified” tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. Carney emphasised that Canada must confront Trump’s tariffs and that Canadians deserve to have a say in who should lead the country during such a crucial time. Although a general election was not scheduled until October 20, Carney is seeking to leverage his significant support, which played a key role in his appointment as Prime Minister. In his announcement, Carney also declared, “Donald Trump wants to break us so that America can control us. We (Canada) will not allow that to happen.”
