Wayanas are American Indians of Caribbean origin. They live in the immense tropical forests of Guyana, in South America. Hunting is still the main ressource to feed the village. The Wayana hunters know and respect Mother Nature because they are part of it. They don’t hunt out of pleasure, but out of necessity. Mimisiku is without any doubt one of the last Wayanas hunter. Leaving for overnight hunts along the river, he catches crocodiles and other wild game with a lasso…
The Wayanas were the first inhabitants of Guyana and now, they’re the last of a vanishing culture. Since the region is developing and getting more industrialized, children are compelled to go to school and get an education to decide the course they wanted their lives to take. Classes are given in the mornings while afternoons are reserved for games and hunting. ancestral knowledge was once important to each and every Wayana. Today, many prefer watching television and will later leave for the city to find a job. Those who stay, leave a glimmer of hope for survival of the Wayana’s culture.
