Charlie Kirk’s suspected assassin: a follow up to Robin Westman? Is this the orchestrated (Russian Intel’s?) attempt to blame everything on the LGBT as the scapegoat?
. News reports indicate that conspiracy theories and misinformation have been spreading online following Kirk’s assassination, including baseless claims seeking to link the suspect to the LGBTQ community. No connection has been established between Charlie Kirk’s suspected assassin and Robin Westman, or between these events and Russian intelligence
Here is what is known based on current reporting:
Charlie Kirk’s assassination: Kirk was fatally shot by a sniper on September 10, 2025, while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. A suspect, described as being in his early 20s and from Utah, was taken into custody on September 12 after being turned in by a family member. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or motive, but a high-powered rifle was recovered.
Robin Westman: Westman was the perpetrator of a separate mass shooting in August 2025 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, in which two children were killed. Westman died by suicide after the attack. News reports at the time indicated that Westman was a transgender woman and had written anti-religious and hateful messages on gun magazines. While Westman’s gender identity became a focus of some right-wing media and Kirk was discussing shootings involving transgender people just before his death, Westman has not been connected to Kirk’s assassin.
Misinformation and conspiracy theories: The quick spread of misinformation online following Kirk’s death included false accusations against several people, including linking an older man briefly detained by police and a Washington state resident to the crime. Other baseless claims have suggested that the shooter was transgender. Misinformation also targeted the liberal TikToker who questioned Kirk moments before the shooting.
Blaming the LGBTQ community: The attempt to pin blame on the LGBTQ community fits a pattern documented by groups like GLAAD, where anti-transgender rhetoric is falsely used to link transgender and nonbinary people to high-profile crimes. Research has shown that anti-LGBTQ rhetoric contributes to offline violence and reinforces extremist narratives.
No evidence of Russian intelligence involvement: There is no credible evidence suggesting that Russian intelligence orchestrated either the Kirk or Westman events, or a campaign to blame the LGBTQ community. Russia has historically been hostile to the LGBTQ community and has been accused of targeting LGBTQ activists within its borders. Any claim of Russian involvement in these specific US incidents remains unsubstantiated.— Michael Novakhov (@mikenov) Sep 12, 2025
