A deadly Ebola outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of Congo has led to one case in France, while New World screwworm threatens US cattle. It also recently faced a hantavirus threat after an outbreak on a cruise ship.
Staffing across health leadership in the Trump administration has been strained. The FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response don’t have permanent leadership in place. Jay Bhattacharya, director of the National Institutes of Health, is also acting in the capacity of the CDC director while the agency juggles multiple outbreak responses.
