⚠️
The terrorists attacks of September 11, 2001, took the lives of nearly 3,000 people that morning and have claimed many more since.
● This graphic shows the route of American Airlines Flight 11 on the morning of September 11, 2001. The Boeing 767 departed from Boston Logan International Airport and was headed toward Los Angeles before it was hijacked and diverted toward New York City.
● The map traces the flight’s path from Massachusetts toward New York, while the lower section identifies the five men investigators determined were the hijackers aboard the aircraft. Flight 11 ultimately struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m.
● Today, the route is remembered as one of the earliest and most consequential moments of September 11. Behind the map and statistics were 92 people aboard Flight 11, each with their own families, lives, and stories.
● 9/11 ultimately led to significant changes in counterterrorism measures in the United States and around the world. Within minutes of the attacks, FBI officials activated the Strategic Incident Operations Center at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C., and by the end of the day, the FBI had established three command posts — one for each attack location.
● In addition to supporting our partners in rescue and recovery efforts, the FBI also launched an investigation into the terrorist attacks. Codenamed PENTTBOM (short for Pennsylvania, Pentagon, and Twin Towers Bombing), the investigation was the largest ever undertaken by the FBI, with more than 4,000 special agents and 3,000 administrative staff assisting in the recovery and subsequent investigation. Within hours, the FBI began identifying the 19 terrorists responsible for the attacks.
● During the investigation, agents across the country interviewed thousands of witnesses and sources and tracked down more than half a million leads worldwide, and the FBI collected and processed more than 150,000 pieces of evidence.
● This piece of steel belongs to one of the eight buildings that made up the World Trade Center. Possibly it came from an elevator or subway track. It represents just a small portion of the 180 million tons of debris collected from Ground Zero after 9/11. The FBI received steel from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 2010.
